"For schools, families, and communities to raise healthy, socially, and emotionally healthychildren start early and take a holistic and positive approach to the challenges kids face." -Brian Flay, American Journal of Public Health
Research shows that social-emotional learning and parent engagement in a child's education and school community positively affect student achievement. This positive relationship exists regardless of race, ethnicity, parent's level of education, or socioeconomic status.
Therefore, schools that focus on engaging with parents in a holistic manner provide numerous benefits to students, such as:
Leadership Concepts Institute understands the importance of the partnership between schools and families. However, having the experience of providing group and one-on-one coaching to parents, including during the pandemic, we have identified the barriers that prevent this from happening and the actions needed to overcome them.
That is why we are now offering THREE different interactive online courses to assist schools and districts in empowering ALL parents, including parents of two of the most vulnerable populations: parents of black boys and children with dyslexia.
Parenting Empowerment services are offered in five 90-minute modules that can be offered every week, once month, or however, a school or district feels fit their schedules and parents' needs. These services are available for ALL parents.
For parents of Black boys or children with dyslexia we offer parent engagement customized for those specific groups therefore providing deep understanding some of the challenges facing these particular students.
Success for OUR Sons and Leaning into Dyslexia are courses that coach parents of black boys and children with dyslexia so they can create tools to support their children academically and emotionally THRIVE.
The courses are founded on Dr. Jean-Louis' two decades of cumulative evidence-based research of educational and social-emotional learning best practices, positions in academia as an online curriculum developer and professor, educational advocate, and a mother of 3 black sons, one with dyslexia.
"I am so glad I enrolled in the Success for OUR Sons course! My son was struggling and was about to be kept a grade behind. Within five weeks, she helped me to navigate the school-home relationship and improve my communication with the school and my son. I was overwhelmed, so receiving positive affirmations during my journey was comforting. In the end, my son's grades and our relationship improved. He was able to stay on track for graduation. Her course also motivated me to enroll in college so that I can be an inspiration for my son!"

Mother of a 16 year-old
"Dr. Angela's classes are cultural shifts. She teaches things that many parents, like me, thought they knew. But the systems she has used with her Black sons, including one with dyslexia, have been eye-opening. Her Success for OUR Sons and Leaning into Dyslexia courses are a requirement for any parent, teacher, or program providers working with Black boys and children with dyslexia."

Statistics show that regardless of socio-economic background, black boys face academic and emotional challenges that other groups don't have to deal with.
Parents that began the coaching program felt fearful for their son's future. They also felt unprepared and overwhelmed to combat the continued struggles that hindered their son's emotional, psychological, physical, and economic well-being.
However, once completed, parents were able to:
For generations, black families have utilized education to "make it" and achieve prosperity. But generational mobility has been stagnant for most black children. The ONLY way to ensure quality education is to ensure they have access to the right resources supporting their academic and emotional growth.
Dr. Jean-Louis is passionate and transparent about helping promote the excellence of children of color in their endeavors.
Dr. Jean-Louis walks the walk! She is knowledgeable, implements, and positively impacts the journey. I’ve learned how making your family your focus can be used in many educational ways but, most importantly, to position generational power and wealth. Thank you, Dr. Jean-Louis!
Reading is a prerequisite to success in life. However, schools seem to be struggling.
Statistics from the National Department of Education reveal 1in 3 children in 4th grade are at or above reading proficiency. Four in ten read below basic level reading.
Combine this with research from the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, which states that 20% of the population has dyslexia. That is 1 in 5 school-age children. Dyslexia also makes up 90 percent of learning disabilities.
Although many states have begun to reassess their reading programs and provide better training for teachers on dyslexia, a main component is missing: the parents.
Without the parent's buy-in, dyslexia is more likely to be untreated holistically. IEP meetings are a disaster leading to further alienation, resentment, and lack of trust from parents.
As a professor, Dr. Jean-Louis met dyslexic students in college for years, retaking classes and struggling needlessly to graduate, all due to a lack of assistance they could have received before coming to college. But their parents failed to get the help they deserved because they didn't know how.
Parents have many responsibilities with their jobs, other children, and family obligations, leaving them little time to "figure out" how to help their dyslexic child. Thus, they are overwhelmed and unprepared in IEP meetings, which leaves them unable to advocate successfully. But this can prevent a child from reaching their potential as they grow up, causing long-term educational, social, and economic consequences.
The Mayo Clinic states that “left untreated, dyslexia may lead to low self-esteem, behavior problems, anxiety, aggression, and withdrawal from friends, parents, and teachers.”
Parent support is essential because:
Parents want their children to learn. Schools CAN work with parents that have children with dyslexia and develop holistic school-home systems that provide equitable and quality education resulting in academic, life, and college success and creating a home with less stress and more support.
By completing this course, parents will be able to:
"The IEP Toolbox was very helpful. We felt prepared for the meeting. Great resource! The pre-assessment questions assisted us with reflections on how we feel, the school, and our daughter's diagnosis of dyslexia. They had similar questions [at the meeting]."

"I wish all parents with children with dyslexia and an IEP could work with Dr. Jean-Louis. She will assist them in the recognition of areas of concern and provide strategies that will match those issues. I worked alongside Dr. Jean-Louis for four years as part of her son's IEP team.
She fought hard, including with me, to ensure the accommodations were met while maintaining her collaborative team approach. She was always well-prepared for our meetings and brought along research and data on dyslexia, which I and the rest of the team found exciting and learned from. I appreciated that because she made me a better educator. As an educational advocate, she represented all children with dyslexia and advocated for the category of dyslexia as a disability which was eventually achieved. Her son would later be inducted into the National Honors Society at his high school and Clayton State University as a dual-enrolled student and recognized as a top 5 scholar-athlete. Dr. Jean-Louis' Leaning into Dyslexia course applies the same focus on evidence-based research and lived experiences as she did as her son's advocate and an educational advocate for all children."

"Dr. Angela has done a phenomenal job with her dyslexic son, allowing him to be a project learner and learn through experiences. It has paid off, as he has achieved academic success and college scholarships. She shares that information in her Leaning into Dyslexia course. I've been in education for over 20 years. I have seen a gamut of things occur, but I always tell her that she is an anomaly and that most parents don't have this level of commitment and patience. It is not a choice but because they have so many other things competing with their time. They have to work and be there for other children. But the strategies that she has used with her son will help parents navigate an overwhelming system, causing less than stellar results. She built her son's curriculum while homeschooling him and then learned how to make connections when she put him in public school. I always say, 'Wow!'
